Instagram shopping is getting easier! The app has just launched a native payments feature, where users can register a debit or credit card. This means that Instagrammers can now check out items without even leaving the app.
This feature is available to some of the users in US and UK at the moment. For booking appointments like at restaurants or salons is now live for a limited number of partners. In the future, things like buying movie tickets can be done in the app.
Instagram’s big move on customer conversion.
Shopping through Instagram could give businesses a big new reason to advertise on the app. It can boost higher conversion rates by keeping people stay in the app during checkout. As a result, brands might prefer to engage customers on the platform.
It’s possible that the payments option will work with Instagram’s “Shoppable Tags.” They were first tested in 2016 to let you see which products were in a post, and click through to buy them on the brand’s website. Since then, the app has partnered with storefront platforms BigCommerce and Shopify to enhance customer engagement. For now, though, none of Instagram’s previous shopping feature partners like Warby Parker or Kate Spade let you checkout within the app. You are still sent to their websites.
The app’s payment function could make impulse buys much easier, attracting more businesses to market on the platform. Even if it takes no cut of the revenue, brands are likely to boost ad spend to get their shoppable posts seen by more people if the native payments mean more of them actually complete a purchase.
